Update on SDSU from Elliott Hishman, the President of SDSU

Adobe Falls – We are aware of the concerns in and around Adobe Falls. SDSU staff will be meeting with Councilmember Scott Sherman and city staff in two weeks to discuss a resolution to this matter as noted in the draft minutes of last Thursday’s DCAC meeting previously posted.

On a much more positive note, I recently attended a reception for the President of SDSU, Elliott Hirshman. Part of his remarks included a number of recent positive accomplishments at SDSU. I asked President Hirshman if he would forward me his notes relating to these accomplishments. I thought you would be interested to read them.

SOME RECENT ACCOMPLISHMENTS AT SAN DIEGO STATE.

WASHINGTON MONTHLY RECENTLY RANKED US #4 FOR PROVIDING A QUALITY EDUCATION AT AN APPROPRIATE COST — JUST BEHIND UNC-CHAPEL HILL.

OUR CAMPUS HAS AN INTERNATIONAL FOCUS & RECORD 2,100 STUDENTS STUDIED ABROAD LAST YEAR——RANKING US 22ND.

ENTREPRENEURSHIP IS ANOTHER AREA OF DISTINCTION & FORBES MAGAZINE RANKS SDSU #18 – AHEAD OF USC, HARVARD AND MICHIGAN, AMONG OTHERS.

AZTECS ATHLETICS IS ALSO ENJOYING A GOLDEN ERA.

OUR TEAMS HAVE WON 22 CONFERENCE TITLES IN 2 YEARS. THE FOOTBALL TEAM PLAYED IN A 5TH CONSECUTIVE BOWL GAME & MEN’S BASKETBALL HAS GONE TO THE NCAA TOURNAMENT FOR 6 YEARS IN A ROW. THE 8TH LONGEST STREAK IN THE COUNTRY — BEHIND KANSAS, DUKE, MICHIGAN STATE, GONZAGA, WISCONSIN, LOUISVILLE & OHIO STATE— VERY IMPRESSIVE COMPANY.

OUR EXCELLENCE IS BEING NOTICED. WE RECEIVED A RECORD 83,864 APPLICATIONS FOR FALL 2015. THE POOL OF APPLICANTS IS TRULY EXTRAORDINARY. AS JUST ONE EXAMPLE, WE HAVE A RECORD NUMBER OF APPLICANTS WHO HAVE OVER A 4.0 GPA.

GREAT PUBLIC UNIVERSITIES HAVE VIBRANT PROGRAMS IN RESEARCH & CREATIVE ENDEAVORS & I WOULD LIKE TO TALK A BIT ABOUT NEW INITIATIVES WE ARE PURSUING AS PART OF OUR STRATEGIC PLAN “BUILDING ON EXCELLENCE.”

OUR ARTS ALIVE SDSU INITIATIVE IS RAISING THE PROFILE OF THE ARTS ON CAMPUS AND WE HOST OVER 350 ARTS EVENTS EVERY YEAR.

LAST SEMESTER OVER 200 STUDENTS, FACULTY AND STAFF COLLABORATED ON AN EPIC BROADWAY STYLE CONCERT VERSION OF “LES MISERABLES.”

IT STARRED BROADWAY VETERAN IVAN RUTHERFORD, WHO HAS PERFORMED AS JEAN VALJEAN OVER 2,200 TIMES ON BROADWAY.

AND JUST LAST MONTH TONY-WINNING ACTOR BD WONG STAGED A READING OF HIS NEW MUSICAL, “MR. DOCTOR.” ON CAMPUS.

OUR SCIENTIFIC RESEARCHERS ARE ALSO RECEIVING ATTENTION.

IN THE LAST YEAR ALONE, THEY IDENTIFIED BRAIN ANOMALIES IN AUTISM,
DISCOVERED A VIRUS THAT AFFECTS DIGESTION IN AT LEAST HALF THE HUMAN POPULATION, & FOUND THAT BALEEN WHALES HAVE EVOLVED TO HEAR SOUNDS THROUGH THEIR BONES — THIS BASIC DISCOVERY MAY HAVE IMPORTANT IMPLICATIONS FOR DEVELOPING ARTIFICIAL HEARING DEVICES.

PROFESSOR ROBERT QUIMBY, WHO YOU WILL HEAR IN A MINUTE, RECEIVED THE BREAKTHROUGH PRIZE IN FUNDAMENTAL PHYSICS FOR DEMONSTRATING THAT THE EXPANSION OF THE UNIVERSE IS ACCELERATING RESEARCH IS A POWERFUL WAY TO LEARN & TO TEACH & IT IS ESSENTIAL TO OUR EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM.

THIS SEMESTER, OVER 500 STUDENTS PRESENTED ORIGINAL RESEARCH & CREATIVE WORK AT OUR STUDENT RESEARCH SYMPOSIUM.

TO FURTHER THESE EFFORTS, WE ARE PLANNING & FUNDRAISING FOR OUR NEW ENGINEERING & INTERDISCIPLINARY SCIENCES COMPLEX.

THIS STATE-OF-THE-ART BUILDING WILL SUPPORT OUR AREAS OF RESEARCH EXCELLENCE, PEDAGOGICAL INNOVATION, ADVANCED ENGINEERING RESEARCH, & OUR ENTREPRENEURSHIP CENTERS—–

WE WILL FUND THE BUILDING THROUGH MULTIPLE PUBLIC & PRIVATE SOURCES — ANOTHER EXAMPLE OF OUR NEW PUBLIC-PRIVATE PARTNERSHIP MODEL.

THE CAMPAIGN FOR SDSU – OUR FIRST COMPREHENSIVE CAMPAIGN — IS ABSOLUTELY CRITICAL TO THIS MODEL.

THANKS TO OUR GENEROUS SUPPORTERS, WE HAVE RAISED OVER $575 MILLION, INCLUDING A RECORD $90 MILLION LAST YEAR.
