Community involvement works. In the middle of March, I was contacted by Del Cerro residents regarding two neighborhood concerns: an abandoned vehicle and too many commercial vehicles belonging to one company, parked on a residential street. I contacted our Police Community Relations Officer, Ed Zwibel, and within 48 hours the abandoned vehicle was removed from the street. A call to the City’s Code Compliance Department resulted in a letter to the owner of the commercial vehicles and that matter should be resolved.

When you see a city-related problem in your neighborhood, take action! For a street-related matter, you can call (619) 527-7500, or go on the city’s website www.sandiego.gov. In the “search” box in the top right hand corner, type “Street Division Service Request.” The Request for Service webpage will pop up. Click on the purple Street Division Request line; then complete the form using the Text or Map option. The first time you fill out the form you will be asked for your name, etc. You only have to fill that out once. Mark it as a favorite web page. The next time you have a street-related problem or concern, you will only have to fill out the problem. You will receive an automated response providing you with a tracking number and instructions on how to track the status. When action is taken, you will receive an email response.

The Navajo Community Planners, Inc. (NCPI) website is up and running, with a big thank you to George Janczyn who set up the website and maintains it. The NCPI website is navajoplanners.org. Go to the website and sign up to be notified whenever there is a new posting to the website. George also helps maintain the DCAC website: delcerroactioncouncil.org. Sign up on the DCAC website to be notified whenever there is a new post.

At the March NCPI meeting, Michael McSweeney was reelected as a board member representing Del Cerro. Each community in the Navajo Area; Grantville, Allied Gardens, Del Cerro and San Carlos, have four elected representatives.

At the March Navajo NCPI meeting, Eric Bolby, who chairs the San Diego Canyon Lands Committee, made a presentation to the NCPI Board requesting support for his effort to help preserve about 10,000 acres of canyon lands owned by the City of San Diego. Currently the canyons (such as our own Navajo Canyon) are “designated open space.” Eric is spearheading the effort to have canyons throughout the city become “dedicated open space.” This would further protect the canyons from ever being sold, and it will preserve the open space. If your neighborhood does not have an active Neighborhood Watch, it is time to start one. Officer Zwibel is ready to assist you at any time. Neighborhood Watch continues to be a viable deterrent to crime in residential neighborhoods, but it does require initiative by the residents to form one. You may email Officer Zwibel at zwibel@pd.sandiego.gov for additional information. He will meet with you and your neighbors to outline the benefits of Neighborhood Watch and help you organize a Neighborhood Watch.

The DCAC email list is growing. Please continue to ask your friends and neighbors to send me their email addresses and I will add them to the list. The list remains confidential.

Officer Zwibel works very hard to keep us informed about criminal activity and how to be pro-active to help protect our community. The sites are interesting, so take some time, and learn what is happening in your neighborhood.

Smart phone applications continue to become part of our daily lives. Amy Schmitz Weiss, an Assistant Professor at SDSU, will be conducting focus groups this spring with residents from the communities adjacent to SDSU. Del Cerro is the community she has selected north of I-8. The subject of the focus groups will be on the topic of mobile applications on smartphones and their uses in daily life for news and entertainment. You must own a mobile device (smartphone is required) in order to participate. The focus groups will last two hours. I will let you know when the next focus group will take place.

The annual Hearst Elementary Foundation Auction & Dinner is set for March 24. If you have not been to one of these events you are missing an incredible evening. It is an amazing event, and it raises a lot of money benefiting the students of Hearst. We have a number of children living in Del Cerro who attend Green Elementary in San Carlos. On March 9, the Green Elementary Foundation is holding the first-ever Taste of San Carlos event. It will take place at the Mission Trails Golf Course located at 7380 Golfcrest Place from 5:30 to 9 p.m. Come to sample the latest fare from local restaurants and caterers, as well as neighbors looking to enjoy an evening mingling with friends will enjoy this event. The Navajo Community Planners, Inc. now has its own website. Keep up-to-date on what is happening in the Navajo Area relating to land use issues. The new site is http://navajoplanners.org. It will provide you with agendas, meeting minutes and updated information on land use issues.

Don’t forget to also check in on the Del Cerro Action Council website at http://delcerroactioncouncil.org. Your comments are welcome there and the DCAC board of directors would like to hear from you. I want to personally thank webmaster George Janczyn for establishing, and helping maintain both the new Navajo Community Planners, Inc. and the Del Cerro Action Council websites.

Remember, the new District 7 includes the entire Navajo Community, all of Tierrasanta, and Mission Valley, and almost all of Serra Mesa and Linda Vista.

Free concert and art exhibition on Sun., Feb. 19 at Mission Trails

The Friends of Taka Sumi-e art society will exhibit traditional Japanese-style brush paintings, called sumi-e, Sunday, Feb. 19, 2012 at Mission Trails Regional Park Visitor Center from 1:00 to 4:00 pm.

The concert is at 3:00 pm in the Visitor Center Theater and features the soothing and haunting sounds of the shakuhachi, or Japanese bamboo flute, played by Mary Lu Brandwein. The sound of the flute, used by Zen monks for meditation as well as music, lends itself to inner reflection and peace, according to Brandwein. Traditional and more contemporary pieces will be experienced. www.mtrp.org
